The loss of our son, Spencer John Ridout, to a fentanyl poisoning on November 2, 2022, has left an indescribable emptiness in our lives. Not a day goes by that we don’t wish we could change the outcome, that we could bring him back. But as we navigate this unimaginable pain, we have chosen to share our story, hoping it will help prevent others from going through the same heartache.
Spencer was a beloved son, brother, and friend whose life was tragically cut short, to a laced fentanyl pill. Spencer had an incredible passion for hockey, and his love for the game brought people together throughout his life. In his honor, the Puck Fentanyl Hockey Tournament was established in 2023 to not only celebrate his memory but to raise awareness about the dangers of fentanyl and other opioids. Each year, this tournament brings together teams to honor Spencer and all those lost to the opioid epidemic. Through this event, the Ridout family strives to make a meaningful impact by raising funds for a nonprofit dedicated to supporting those affected by substance use disorder, prevention, education and mental health. Spencer’s legacy lives on through the unity, love, and awareness the tournament fosters every year, reminding us of the importance of community and the fight to prevent further loss.
Through this event, we hope to reach just one person, to give them the knowledge and the tools they need to make better choices and avoid this painful journey we never wanted to take.
Our fight is one of love, awareness, and a commitment to ensuring Spencer’s story serves a greater purpose—because if we can save even one life, then his legacy will live on in a way that matters.
